Who, What, Where, Watching Wednesday

Who – Josh Horowitz

Needing a good laugh, I spent a good part of yesterday watching Josh Horowitz’s “MTV After Hours.”  These short interviews with celebrities crack me up.  They’re 80% absurd, 20% enlightening, and 100% hilarious (gosh, that was a cliche, wasn’t it?).  You can watch my favorite “After Hours” video above, and some more of my favorites here, here, and here (oh, and here).

What- Starla by Loeffler Randall

what

Remember when I talked here, about featuring items that stop me in my tracks.  These shoes fit right into that category.  I’ve always had a thing for stars (I think it goes back to my junior high current Harry Potter obsession), and these shoes have stars in abundance.  There something about them that is ethereal, but I can also imagine them being the focal point of an edgy outfit.

Where- Sedona, Arizona

where

As soon as I heard about Slide Rock State Park, located in Sedona, AZ I knew I had to add it to my list of places to go.  Near the homestead of this state park, there is a slick natural water chute, that you can literally slide down.  Awesome!  Besides this game-changing feature, Sedona also features great places to shop for Native American crafts, outdoor activities, and great outdoor dining options.

Watching – Dove Real Beauty Video

Powerful.

Pray for Boston

pray-for-boston-gloveAs I was getting ready to write a post for yesterday, I learned about the tragedy in Boston.  I was glued to the coverage for most of last night, and am struck by what a senseless act of violence this was.  Through all the media coverage, I found myself hopeful.  Due to the reports of acts of heroism from ordinary citizens, both runners and spectators alike, I know that the human spirit is alive and well.  I’m keeping all those effected in my thoughts and prayers, and sending a heartfelt thanks to all the heroes who were first to respond to the scene.

Sheryl Sandberg with Levo League

Last week, I had an amazing opportunity to see Sheryl Sandberg, author of Lean In and COO of Facebook, speak at a live office hours event with Levo League. It was held at the Paley Center in New York City, and I took a big girl day trip up there all by myself. If anyone knows me, they know that I don’t like to do many things by myself. However, this was an opportunity that I wasn’t willing to let pass me by.

Before Sheryl started, my super cool Levo League mug, and Sheryl speaking

Sheryl was an absolutely amazing and inspiring speaker. You can’t help but feel energized by her passion for advancing women in the workplace. Below, are two of her pieces of advice that really got me excited to “Lean In”.

“Your generation gets to define your own ideals. You can change this, and you can change it now. You can decide what you want to be. You can decide its better to be most likely to succeed than have a prom date because, trust me, it is. You can decide to notice in your offices and in your schools when girls and women get interrupted more than boys. And you, you don’t have to be senior, you can interrupt that meeting and say “I’d like to hear what she has to say.” That’s a powerful move. It will gain you respect in your organizations. You can decide to stop calling little girls bossy. The next time you hear someone call their daughter or a child bossy, look at them and say “she’s not bossy, she has executive leadership skills.” If your generation succeeds, if we get more women into leadership roles, we will no longer have the stereotype which associates leadership with men. So next time you have the opportunity to stand up, stand up, stand up and say you want to be CEO, and don’t just do it for you. Do it because you’ll change the stereotype for everyone else.”

“You are our hope for a more equal world. If this changes, it changes with your generation. So stand up, stand up for that one thing. If you can think of one thing, stand up, one thing you’re going to do – to reach, to lead. If you do this, you’re going to change the world. Congratulations to you. “

You can watch Sheryl Sandberg’s office hours here. And if you never have, definitely check out Levo League.

Have you read Lean In? Follow the movement? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Who, What, Where, Watching Wednesday

Sorry about missing this feature last week, I was absolutely crazy with work and studying.  I found it really difficult to get on the blog train mid-week while I was struggling so much, so I’m trying not to fall off again.  I love blogging and sharing things with you, and it’s way easier to find time to do it when you keep your momentum going.  Thanks for sticking with me through last week!  Now back to our original programming….

Who – Beyonce

who

I’m not featuring Beyonce here for any of the reasons she’s been in the news lately; the line “bow down, bitches”, calling her tour the Mrs. Carter tour, and a little further back her HBO documentary.  I’m featuring Beyonce because finding out she was performing at the Made in America festival this Labor Day has been the most exciting moment of the week.  You can have your own opinions about Beyonce’s music or lifestyle, but girl can work a stage.  I can’t wait to spend my labor day weekend with my best friends, some Budweisers, and Mr. and Mrs. Carter.

WhatRunway Stretch Silk Color Blocked Scoopneck Tank Maxi Dress

what

Boy that name was a mouthful.  I’m hoping to live in maxi dresses, aviators, and sandals all summer and hope my corporate job is ok with that.  This dress is the most versatile maxi I’ve found, and perhaps its because its in such neutral colors.  I’d love to make it fun and playful with some bright baubles, and maybe add my leather bomber for those brisk summer nights.  Either way, I love it.

Where – Bettles Lodge – Bettles, Alaska

where

If I’m going to go all the way to Alaska, its going to be for an amazing outdoor experience.  Although the Bettles Lodge doesn’t seem to be the most luxurious of lodges, when you look at that view of the northern lights, I don’t think you could ask for anything more.  I’ve always wanted to see the northern lights, and I’d gladly give up a little bit of luxury for that awe inspiring sight.  There are mountains and a lake and it is so beautiful.

Watching – The Following

watching

I’ve been trying to avoid posting about The Following because, I know there is no way it is everyone’s cup of tea.  It really scares me, like REALLY scares me; but, the twists and turns keep me coming back.  The Following follows the FBI and ex-agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), as they try and figure out the secrets of Joe Carroll’s (James Purefoy) cult.  The cult uses Edgar Allen Poe as one of their central themes, and they gather around the more sinister ideas in his short stories.  I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it but, these cult members are seriously SCARY.  I’m not going to give anything away in case anyone wants to jump on The Following train but, every week I find myself saying (to myself, because none of my friends watch it), “there’s no way…NO WAY.”  Yet somehow, it is always the way.  If you like shows that are thrill rides, I really recommend The Following.  Also as a bonus, Shawn Ashmore, who I had a big crush circa 1999 (thank you, Animorphs), also stars in the show.

What are you loving this week?
